About Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND)

The Federal government of Nigeria has initiative Student Loan scheme to Public Tertiary Institutions across Nigeria.The Student Loan program is an initiatives launches by the federal government of Nigeria under the Nigerian Education Loan fund (NELFUND) to support Nigerian public tertiary institutions students with free interest loan to pursuing their education.

This NELFUND Student Loan initiatives is specifically opens for students from low income families.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) is a government initiative created to support Nigerian students by providing access to interest free loans for their higher education.

The program aims to ensure that financial limitations do not prevent qualified students from pursuing tertiary education in public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.

The NELFUND is designed to promote equal opportunities by helping students cover tuition fees and other academic expenses. The fund operates under the Students Loan Act, which was established to reduce financial hardship among students and improve enrollment rates in higher institutions.

The NELFUND Student Loan initiative was established on April 3th 2024 by the Federal Government of Nigeria under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu to overcome financial challenges faced by students in higher education.

The Student Loan application process is simple and managed through an online portal where eligible students can apply, verify their details, and track their loan status.

Loan repayment begins only after graduation and upon securing employment and or begins two years after NYSC, ensuring that students can focus on their studies without immediate financial pressure.

NELFUND Student Loan Application Portal for the 2025/2026 academic session

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) is pleased to the general public that student loan application portal will be reopens on october 23th, 2025 and the loan application portal will ends on January 31th, 2026. All eligible students are encouraged to take the advantage and apply now.

This Loan is opens for Nigerian students enrolled in any public tertary institutions across the country. The loan application form will be available online at the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) on Thursday October 23th, 2025.

The repayment of this free interest loan will begins immediately after graduation and upon securing employment. The NELFUND may start deduct some percentage of NYSC serving allowance to cover some loan outstanding before securing employment.

Eligibility Criteria for Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND)

To qualify interest free loan support under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), students must meet certain conditions set by the Federal Government. These criteria ensure that the scheme benefits students who genuinely need financial assistance to pursue higher education.

1. Nigerian Citizenship: Must be Nigerian Students citizens enrolled in recognized public tertiary institutions such as universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, or technical colleges across Nigeria.

2. Admission Status: The students must have gained admission into any recognized higher institution in Nigeria through a legitimate process (e.g. UTME/DE).

3. Financial Need: The students should show an inability to pay tuition and other educational costs without support. Proof of need may include family income details and or other relevant information.

4. Academic Standing: Students must maintain good academic performance and adhere to the institutions rules and regulations to remain eligible for continued funding.

6. Repayment Condition: Loan repayment commence only after graduation and when the beneficiary secures employment or starts earning an income.

Follow the Simple Steps to get your student Loan:

Step 1: Visit the NELFUND Portal to register on the Student Loan Application.

Step 2: Click on the “APPLY NOW” button to start your application form.

Step 3: Click on the “Request for Student Loan tap button and fill the loan application.

Step 4: After fill out the application, click on Submit to apply for loan.

Step 5: Your application submitted will be reviewed. After the students details successfully verified, their application status will change from pending to approved and Payments will be made to your school for official charges, while the upkeep fees will be paid to the bank account you provided in your records.
